Denise Garlock - Owner, Makeup By Denise Lynn

I am a Makeup Artist and licensed Esthetician based out of Jacksonville, Florida and servicing all of Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia.  I specialize in skincare, bridal, and special event makeup.

I graduated from the University of North Florida in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.  Even though I did not pursue my Esthetics license early on, makeup has always been a passion of mine.  There is something so gratifying about helping someone feel as beautiful outside as they already feel inside.  Every face is a blank canvas, my goal is to enhance (not change) your natural features to make you feel like the best, most confident version of you.

I don’t recall when I started playing with makeup, but it I’m guessing I was around 10 years old. Since then, my experimenting has grown into a passion. I’ve now been a makeup artist for over 20 years and lover of all things makeup and beauty.

My interest in clean beauty started when I got pregnant. I knew I didn’t want to get my makeup on my baby because I didn’t know what was in it, but I was fine putting it on my face? I started thinking about what’s in the products I’m using and when I started to pay attention, I was SHOCKED! Some of the most expensive and established brands that I trusted, have very toxic ingredients. I then started to consider what happens to the products when we are finished with them. What an overwhelming thought, the number of people on this planet and what they consume and throw away. Crazy fact, the beauty industry creates 120 billion units of packaging every year and is the number one contributor to plastic production in the world.

As a makeup artist and concerned mother, I became overwhelmed with the options available and trying to keep up with the latest and greatest “trends”. The commercials, the ads, going into the big, fancy makeup stores (you know who you are) – my passion started to became a formidable task. I imagine I’m not the only one that feels this pressure, so I took it upon myself to provide guidance to others.

Why do I avoid promoting one brand?

I was approached by so many people wanting me to promote their brand, their product, their label. To me, it all seemed to be a nearly identical product. There is no one brand available that covers the best of all products. Like traditional makeup brands, organic and sustainable beauty brands have their strengths and weaknesses in their respective product lines. I want to hand-pick and choose the best products from the safest and most sustainable brands available for my clients. My goal is avoid promoting consumerism and to educate my clients on simple, effective, beautiful makeup application using products from companies that use sustainable ingredients and are conscious of their impact on our environment.

I look for five things in the products I recommend:

  1.  They are animal and cruelty free.

  2. They are free of harmful chemicals.

  3. They are truly sustainable with production and packaging .

  4. And last but most obvious, the products look and feel great on the skin!

I’m an educator, not an influencer. I believe that people should be educated to make their own decisions on what is best for them and this planet. I want you to be your own advocate, learn what is truly good for YOU and ditch the bad stuff. In the meantime, have fun with your beauty products!
